چکیده

We consider a model of a fishery in which the dynamic of the unharvested fish population is given by the stochastic logistic growth equation dx(t) = [κx(t) (θ − x(t))] dt+ σx(t)dW (t). Similar as in the classical deterministic analogon, we assume that the fishery harvests the fish population following a constant effort strategy. In a first step we derive the effort level that leads to maximum expected sustainable yield, which is understood as the expectation of the equilibrium distribution of the stochastic dynamics. This replaces the non-zero fixed point in the classical deterministic setup. In a second step, we assume that the fishery is risk averse and that there is a trade off between expected sustainable yield and uncertainty measured in terms of the variance of the equilibrium distribution. We derive the optimal constant effort harvesting strategy for this problem. In a final step, we consider an approach which we call the mean-variance analysis to sustainable fisheries. Similar as in the now classical mean-variance analysis in Finance, going back to Markowitz (1957) [12], we study the problem of maximizing expected sustainable yields under variance constraints, and dual to this, minimizing the variance, e.g. risk, under guaranteed minimum expected sustainable yields. We derive explicit formulas for the optimal fishing effort in all four problems considered and study the effects of uncertainty, risk aversion and mean reversion speed on fishing efforts. Variance Aversion in the Small and the Large

This paper proves an analogue of Pratt’s theorem for two measures of risk aversion for mean-variance preferences. A direct link is established between these measures and standard measures of risk aversion. Implications for problems of choice under uncertainty such as portfolio choice problems are derived.

Optimal Inventory Control in Market-Making with Risk Aversion

Market-makers have the obligation to trade fixed amounts of assets at quoted bid or ask prices, and their inventories are exposed to the potential loss when the market price moves in an undesirable direction. One approach to reduce the risk associated with price uncertainty is to adjust the inventory at the price of losing potential spread gain. For a single-asset model, we show that a threshol...

Output versus Input Controls under Uncertainty: the Case of a Fishery

The paper compares the management outcomes with a total allowable catch (TAC) and a total allowable effort (TAE) in a fishery under uncertainty. Using a dynamic programming model with multiple uncertainties and estimated growth, harvest, and effort functions from one of the world’s largest fisheries, the relative economic and biological benefits of a TAC and TAE are compared and contrasted in a...

A Concept of Bayesian Regulation in Fisheries Management

Stochastic variability of biological processes and uncertainty of stock properties compel fisheries managers to look for tools to improve control over the stock. Inspired by animals exploiting hidden prey, we have taken a biomimetic approach combining catch and effort in a concept of Bayesian regulation (BR). The BR provides a real-time Bayesian stock estimate, and can operate without separate ...

Yield Uncertainty and Risk aversion in Duality models: a Mean-Variance approach

This paper aims at the exploration of the questions connected with the effects of uncertainty and risk in agriculture and, generally, in each economic sector where risk considerations are established. The aim of the first part is to give the key features for the estimation of production structures using dual approach and risk prevalence. In order to state risk non-neutrality into the implemente...
